Through the next couple of days after I learned a lot. On Friday
we went to New York City to deliver a table. We left from New Haven that
morning. I did not realize how close Connecticut was to New York until this
trip. We hit a lot of traffic on the way to the city and it took over four
hours. We had the table strapped in the back so it would not move. We made it to
the city eventually to make our delivery to Midtown. We were in the heart of
the city and it was very busy the whole time. We had to park a block away from
our destination so we had to carry the table through the crowds of people. We
eventually got to the building and carried up to the elevator and made it to the
delivery site. I was very happy to know City Bench does not do this type of
delivery very often. This past Monday we were back in the shop and went right
back to flattening down board that were going to turn into a vanity. I got it
flattened eventually after a long time. After that I got the belt sander out
and spent a while getting the major lines out of the wood. After that we went
to a finer sander to get the lines from the belt sander out, then to a different
type of sanding motion to get the lines out from the previous one. What I learned
from this process that in wood working the more work you do earlier the better.
If you cut the slab right it will be straighter meaning it will dry better
meaning you will have to do less flattening and then less sanding and then less
work overall.

The next step was to start to finish the top of the stool. Because of the huge crack down the center I needed a way to make sure the crack doesn’t spread and to keep it contained. You can do this in three different ways. You can use epoxy, a butterfly, or a Dutchman. Epoxy is just filling the crack with a mixture of plastic fillings and wood dust to give it color. You mix the chemicals together and then add the wood dust and mix it into a peanut butter type thickness and then spread it into all of the cracks on the piece. You lay it in thick so make sure it goes all the way in. On my stool I used epoxy and a butterfly. A butterfly is a wooden insert that you put in a middle of a crack to keep it from spreading. You first have to cut out a butterfly. There are many models you use that have different sizes. You trace them onto a piece of wood and then cut out the major shape with the belt saw. Then you sand it down so it is similar to the model. Next you use the router to cut the hol...
